Small Acts. BIG Change.

Small Acts Project. If we all do small acts, then together we will make big, positive changes for the planet and all living things!

Challenges facing our planet and living things can seem overwhelming! You want to help, but sometimes, it is helpful to have ideas on where to start. Small Acts are ones that almost anyone can do, no matter your age or where you live, and usually cost no money. Here are some of the Small Acts that people just like you have shared with us!

We list the Small Acts in 6 categories, but most could fit more than one category.

Animals

Save sea turtles by filling in any holes that you dig at the beach. It is sea turtle nesting season now and nesting females and hatchlings can fall into these holes if they are left on the beach. -Bonnie Do not release pet frogs and snakes into the wild if you can’t take care of them anymore.

Kindness

I try to smile and greet everyone I meet in a friendly way. -Tom H.

I went through His Way Recovery. Got sober. And I have been driving our church bus for 6 years now. My husband drives to. I owe my life to my pastor. I do what I can to give back. It used to be just our pastor driving and doing everything. I saw how tired he was, I knew what I had to do. -Jolene

I randomly pay for someone's meal or coffee/tea that is behind me in line. -Tina, Florida

Be kind! It really is that simple. Everyday just be kind to others and to animals and even nature and that energy will have a massive ripple effect. -Kerryn V., Australia

I travel a lot and when I see a homeless person I buy them a cup of coffee. I usually buy one for myself too. -Jason W.

Every day be kind. Just the act of kindness changes the energy around you. - Magnificent Kids, worldwide

Clean Up and Conservation of Our Earth

This last week I picked up fast food wrappers, TINSEL (ARRGGHH!!!!) of all things, and for my dad who was a respiratory therapist for years--many cigarette butts at our local riparian park. My thought was that I didn't want all that garbage washing down and into our salmon's spawning fields. -Myra R. When I was young and we went camping in the Boy Scouts, we were asked to always leave our campsite better than we found it. I.e., clean up trash that you see. Today, I try to do this whenever we are out in nature. -Keith T. My son Owen (9) started his own organization the Animal Saving and Clean Up Association to help clean up our local streams and waterways and help animals. We have cleaned up 2 streams so far - with our eye to clean up many more in our township. -Katherine L., Springfield Township, PA. We are fighting to save the state forests bought with Florida Forever funds from military training and that will just be a toehold. Help! Urgent Friends of the Forest jvlzp1@aol.com. -Judi R. Leave no trace. Stay on designated trails at parks so you don’t hurt plants and animals. Breighton runs a club for homeschoolers called "Defenders of Nature". He is always out cleaning parks, hunting air potatoes or helping the environment in some way. He wanted to raise money for the Humane Society of Pinellas. He (and his brother Emmerson) went through their stuffed animals and held a animal adoption to raise money to buy treats and toys. -Breighton R., Age 9, Clearwater, FL

Sustainability

Recycle as much as possible and make your own "individual serving" packages out of reusable containers. -Erika S., California

Take your own reusable straws, chopsticks, and even containers for leftovers to restaurants when you eat out. -Avalon T., Florida

I recycle like crazy! With all the recycling, we usually only have about 1 bag of garbage on garbage day, besides the lil ones in bedrooms and bathrooms...All my recycling from the kitchen gets rinsed out before going in the recycle bin. The microwavable serving containers we get sometimes, I wash them and they come in very handy! Especially when we have Granny who is on a special diet. We make her enough for more than one day, put it in those, refrigerate, and get it out to warm it for her when it is time for her to eat. Less work for us, and she gets her food in a timely manner. -Mary D.

Don’t take long showers – Ethan A.

Food

Did you know your food choices have a huge impact on the environment, including land destruction for crops to feed cattle, and also a huge part of our water sources? Do your research to learn about how certain foods, like animal products, use massive amounts of our Earth’s resources. A hamburger takes approximately 660 gallons of water to produce which is the same amount for 2 months of showers. A lot of people don’t realize the toll such heavy animal product consumption takes on our planet. It is really easy to greatly lessen animal product consumption, and the environment will thank you!

Grow your own edible garden. -Becky, MI
