Citizen Science

Become a FrogWatch USA Volunteer

"FrogWatch USA is a citizen science program established in 1998 to provide individuals, groups and families with opportunities to learn about wetlands in their communities by reporting on the calls of local frogs and toads.

Though this program has been managed by many organizations over the years, in 2022 the AZA https://www.aza.org/amphibian-conservation [Association of Zoos & Aquariums] appointed the Akron Zoo as the new managing organization for FrogWatch USA.

FrogWatch USA encourages volunteers to collect and contribute information about the breeding calls of frogs and toads to a national dataset that is publicly available online. The information collected by thousands of FrogWatch USA volunteers across the United States is then analyzed to inform the development of environmental protection and amphibian conservation strategies."

Make Habitat

Make some frog habitat at your home, school, or business!

Providing frog habitat is easy and doesn't have to cost anything!

Some things you may use are:

  • Old storage containers, bowls, or containers; even if they have cracks or are broken, they can be used as habitat!

  • 3 foot piece of PVC pipe in the ground acts as a treefrog house, providing shelter from predators like cats and birds; the UF IFAS site has some great information on “How to Make a Treefrog House

  • Rocks

  • Ground cover

  • Water source

Make sure to consider providing space to live, breed, hide and hydrate!

Critter Skimmer

If you have a pool, then you need a Critter Skimmer.  It replaces your old skimmer lid with a new one that has a spiral ramp that leads to an opening in the cover so frogs and other small animals can escape your pool. If you have a pool, make sure you check these out!

The goal of making this frog habitat was to attract Southern toads, but it attracted much more! We were even able to make space where tadpoles appeared one day, and eventually one grew into a big bullfrog!
